Pitch Lake

"Bitumen" would appear to be at least an equally acceptable answer to this question.

On its Asphalt page (linked from the Pitch Lake page), Wikipedia gives 'bitumen' as an alternative name for asphalt, adding that "in British English, 'bitumen' is used instead of 'asphalt'. The word 'asphalt' is instead used to refer to asphalt concrete, a mixture of construction aggregate and asphalt itself (also called 'tarmac' in common parlance)."

Wikipedia also goes into the details of usage in Australia, Canada and the USA – all of which is too complicated to go into here!
